Lipstick is as much a part of women as their clothes, but it also stains fabric so easily. However, I discovered that there is no need to be stressed out over a lipstick stain; with a bit of care, it can be easily removed. Here are a few tips.

The first thing to do is to check the material. If it is the kind that requires professional treatment, take it straight to the drycleaners.

But on most other kinds of fabric I try to actually heed my Mom’s advice - spot the stain as soon as possible and blot it with plain water, preferably warm, to, at the very least, lessen the stain. Once you have done this and think more treatment is required you can treat the stain in a number of ways using household products.

Moisten cloth or cotton swabs with either alcohol or ammonia and blot the stain till it disappears.

Dishwashing agents have grease fighting chemicals in them are generally harmless to fabric. I let the stained part soak in the detergent for 10-15 minutes and then wash the fabric by hand in warm water. In fact, I hand wash at least the stained part of the garment using the dishwashing agent as soap irrespective of the treatment I used.

Hair spray needs to be left on the spot for about 10 minutes to work its magic and then wipe away the stain with a warm moist cloth. When using hair spray, make sure the fabric can tolerate it. If in doubt, avoid this remedy.

Always remember to blot from outside in and not rub the stain with the cleaning agent you use, as the latter action merely spreads the stain.

At times the lipstick stain merely fades. In this case, repeat the treatment you used. And soon enough, the stain is gone!
