With growing emphasis on conservation of beauty even in old age and the increase in the incidence of diseases like cancer, the importance of caring for the skin, the largest part of our body, is an ever present concern for today’s woman. A news item that is regularly featured is the harmful effects of chemicals. I think that in this scenario the arrival of organic skin care is a welcome relief.
The organic skin care products are popular, but one needs to be wary whilst purchasing them since anything that is originally derived from an organic matter is termed organic even if it has been contaminated by non-organic chemicals in the production process. Only if 95% of the product is organically produced can it be termed organic. Therefore it is important to read the product label before purchasing a so called organic skin care product.
Much of the know-how is borrowed from ancient cultures such as Chinese and other Asian countries. But scientific studies are conducted to verify the effects of the ingredients. More and more native remedies are being tested to identify the elements that can help preserve our skin. Recently, an Australian company introduced ‘lemon myrtle essential oils’ based skin care products. Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a time tested ingredient available in many skin care products that helps regenerate Vitamin E and protect collagen which our skin is primarily made of.
While newer ‘organic’ products are being made available in the market on an almost daily basis one needs to be alert while buying. Our skin is also very sensitive and prone to allergic reactions. If in doubt, buy the highly visible branded products since more research would have gone into the effectiveness of the product before releasing it in the market.
