Is it not great fun experimenting with makeup and watch your face light up or change dramatically? But one has to be careful about choosing the right kind of makeup, particularly one that matches one’s skin tone and eye color.

The eyes are the windows to the soul, goes the much touted cliché; and how true that is! Eye makeup can completely transform your look from innocent babe in the woods to catty femme on the prowl to the no-nonsense smart casual.

Take for example, if you have a dark skin tone, a bright red or screaming pink eye shadow won’t do you any good. If you’re pale, black eye shadow would be a complete no-no! So, one has to start by being realistic and then choose the eyeliner, the eye shadow and the mascara that is best suited for your eye color.

Blue eyes take on shades of brown, camel and taupe very well; green eyes look dreamier with shades of pink, salmon, brownish-pink and mauve eye shadow; and brown eyes stand out when shaded with slate blue, grey and plum colored eye shadows.

The eye shadow is to be applied on the entire lid or sometimes, for effect between your eyes and your eyebrows. You could blend two colors such as light blue and turquoise to bring about a dramatic effect or pink and mauve, for instance. Just brush the shadow from inside out, very gently and dab the final result with a cotton swab to smoothen it out.

Now, pick up the eyeliner, which goes on the base of your lids. This helps make your eyes look bigger and brighter. You could also use a bit of the liner on the bottom of the eyes for effect. You can use black mascara to thicken the lashes but colored mascara can be tried out to make a bold statement.

A last word, dress up your eyes as per your mood or when the occasion demands it. Never thrust it on just because you have to. A few smooth shades and that will do the trick!
