A rock-solid piece of animated sci-fi comedy that'll tickle some kids, amuse the parents, and leave some walking out of the theater with a good feeling except younger kids and girls of all ages
The goodFunny and inventive. A clever sense of humor, some really impressive animation, a bunch of solid voice performances and a few life lessons that are sweet but not over-sappy |
The badSome dialogs, characterization, story and characters might only interest boys 8+. Main story is confusing concept for younger kids. |
Meet the Robinsons (2007)

Disney always had it. They are the masters of fantasy story telling. With "Meet the Robinson" they have combined their age old mastery, good old sweetness with amazing technical excellence in animation and visual effects.
It's certainly one of the more imaginative-looking Disney cartoons in recent memory. A good story with portions ripped off from the Back to the Future series. Brightly animated, inventive, hilarious, and an overall enjoyable adventure for pre-teen boys.
There lies one problem. I went to this movie with my seven year old daughter and her friend and I can see how both of them were confused and bored. Maybe this movie is for 8 year olds and above but with all the sci-fi theme and advanced stuff like time travel, I will be surprised if many girls would love the movie. Having a friend in current time of same age who turns out to be your kid in future time. Having a grown up enemy who is (or was) your a roommate younger than your age. Meeting someone who could be your foster mom in future turns out to be your wife?... Ugh! that's a little too much of a twister for kids.
If we just set aside the main theme of the storyline, it is surprising that this movie is a product of six screenwriters. I'd have expected it to be a mess. Instead they bring together so many disparate components and make it work well for the story. The movie has an impressive balance of chuckle for grown ups like me and kids (who can figure it out). Younger than 8 year olds might not find the movie exciting except for the visual experience.
The voice actors for the film did not get hired because they are big name actors rather this movie is a complete departure from that and thankfully they did an impressive job.
- Technical excellence: 5 stars
- Visual richness: 5 stars.
- Story: 4 stars
- Overall experience: 3 stars (???)
Why? well, I knew that when I looked at the face of my daughter and her friend watching this movie who seemed to have lost all their interest half way through. One day later, she does not even remember part of the story. After all, any adult reviewing this movie is no different from a any kid reviewing "Schindler's list". I could pen down my experience trying to get into kid's shoes but their faces told their experience better.
