Cannons were invented for use in battle to penetrate enemy defences or repel enemy attacks. The technology was mastered during the last millennium. Cannons were designed to use gun powder for launching "cannon balls" towards enemy fortifications.

These are some of the largest cannons used in warfare over the last 1000 years. I have excluded modern artillery from this list.

The Turks used this heavy cannon to breach the walls of Constantinople in 1453 during their 55-day seige of the Ottomon empire.

After being on permanent display for four centuries, these cannons were used to battle a British fleet in 1807. The artillery hit a British ship with two 700 pound cannonballs, killing 60 sailors.

In 1867, Sultan Abdul Aziz gifted Queen Victoria the 17 ton "Dardanelles Gun" - one of the cannons used at the siege of Constantinople.

This cannon is the world's biggest wheeled cannon ever made. Reportedly, it took four elephants to swivel it around on its axis.

Currently located at the Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur, India, this cannon was cast in 1720 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

Never used in battle, the Maharaja Jai Singh reportedly test-fired it once in 1720. The cannon ball is said to have landed at Chaksu about 40 km away. The impact apparently formed a lake at the spot. Jaivana's cannoneer is said to have died on the spot on firing the cannon. Eight people and one elephant were also reportedly killed by the shock wave and many houses collapsed in Jaipur.

Tsar Pushka is listed as the largest howitzer ever made in the Guinness Book of Records. Commissioned in 1586 by Russian Tsar Fedor, son of Ivan the Fourth, the cannon was intended to fire grapeshot and to defend the Kremlin in times of war.

It is believed to never have been used, however, and may in fact have been intended as a showpiece of military might and engineering from the beginning. The original wooden carriage was made in the early 19th century but was destroyed by fire in 1812.

The new carriage and cast iron cannonballs were made in 1835. The cannonballs on display by the Tsar Cannon are in fact of a larger diameter than the cannon will accept.
