Here are my predictions on the Cricket World Cup (from the Super-8 stage). The disparity amongst teams at the preliminary group-stage is such that it is very easy to predict the teams that are going to make it to the Super-8 stage. These (Super-8) teams are:

Group A: Australia and South Africa

Group B: India and Sri Lanka

Group C: New Zealand and England

Group D: West Indies and Pakistan

So, here is some crystal-ball gazing.

The Australian juggernaut has been stuttering in recent weeks.

  1. Coming into the World Cup, Australia has lost a series (0-3) to New Zealand.
  2. Prior to that they lost to England (0-2) in the Commonwealth Bank tournament finals.
  3. Their bowling line-up is suspect with Brett Lee being ruled out of the World Cup due to injury and Glen McGrath being a shadow of his fiery former self.

In the Super-8 stage, they are going to buck their string of defeats against England (after all, the matches are on neutral grounds) with a win. They are also going to win against Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka.

However, they are going to loose to India and New Zealand.

They will make it to the semi-finals (SEED 2)

After a disastrous test-series against Australia, England has resurrected its ODI prospects winning 5 matches against Australia on the trot. Their 2007 ODI record is 5-5.

  1. Prior to their Australia series, England in 2006 had a horrendous ODI track record.
  2. They lost a series to India (1-5) in India; drew with Pakistan (2-2) on home soil and lost to Sri Lanka (0-5) in England.

In the Super-8 stage, I predict they will win against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. They are going to loose to India, Australia and West Indies.

They will make it to the semi-finals. They are a dark horse though and might surprise people by making it to the knock-out stage.

India seems to have dramatically improved its chances after dismal ODI performances in West Indies & South Africa. They look to be peaking at the right time, which is evident in their recent resurgence. With a batting lineup that is every other team's envy, their only weakness appears to be in the bowling department.

  1. In 2007, India has beaten Sri Lanka (2-1) and West Indies (3-1), albeit on home soil.
  2. Their recent success has mitigated earlier ODI failures in West Indies (loosing 1-4) and South Africa (0-4).

In the Super-8 stage, I predict they will win against England, Australia, New Zealand and West Indies. They are going to loose to South Africa and their traditional rivals, Pakistan.

They will make it to the semi-finals (SEED 3)

New Zealand will enter the World Cup competition following a resounding 3-0 series win over Australia at home. So, their confidence is going to be sky high. Prior to the Australia series, they drew with Sri Lanka at home 2-2. However, in the CB Series (Dec. 06- Jan. 07), they had a pathetic record of 2-6.

In the Super-8 stage, I predict New Zealand will defeat Australia, Sri Lanka, and West Indies. But, they will loose to Pakistan, India and South Africa.

They will NOT make it to the semi-finals

Pakistan has had a tumultous last few weeks with a doping scandal hitting the headlines. The exclusion of Shoib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif from the team will hurt their chances. They have also had a mixed bag of performances in recent weeks. Over the last few years, they:

  1. Won against West Indies (3-1) at home;
  2. Lost to South Africa (1-3) in an away series and drew against England (2-2)

In the Super-8 stage, I predict Pakistan will defeat India, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. But, they will fall to Australia, England and South Africa.

They will NOT make it to the semi-finals on the basis of run differential (SEED 4)

South Africa has been winning ODI matches over the last 6-8 months consistently and convincingly. They white-washed India 4-0 and won against Pakistan 3-1. They have the right blend of youth and experience in their team.

The million-dollar qusetion though is that their recent success has been at home. So, how are they going to fare on neutral grounds? hey:

In the Super-8 stage, I predict South Africa will defeat England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They will fall to West Indies - just a freak loss.

They will make it to the semi-finals (SEED 1).

Sri Lanka has some serious problems. They do look like a team that is somewhat over the hill. But, they have enough experience to be able to spring a surprise.

Their recent ODI performances have not been too inspiring. They lost to India (1-2); drew with New Zealand (2-2). The silver lining though is that both series were on foreign soil.

I predict Sri Lanka will win against West Indies and loose every other match in the Super-8 competition.

They will NOT make it to the semi-finals

India's performance was woeful! I was so disgusted that I did not want to come back here and eat crow! But, I guess I had to do it. So, here I am eating humble pie!!

So, Mathew, you are basically concurring South Africa will win the World Cup! And, India will lose to Australia! I DISAGREE!
