This is a two-horse race between 'The Departed' and 'Babel', with 'The Queen' being the underdog. While Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Babel is a controversial film with its criticism of American foreign policy, it portrays reality and human struggle. Dealing with interwoven stories, it seems to have the best chance of winning the oscar.

Finally, it looks like this will be Martin Scorsese's year at the Oscars. With several nominations in the past (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Aviator) but no wins, he has come up with a masterpiece that should and will receive the nod.

Paul Greengrass is the dark horse.

Helen Mirren has a virtual lock on this Oscar. She has turned in a superb acting performance that is so striking and genuine, that it almost seems she is a clone of her 'real-life' counterpart.

Meryl Streep is a close competitor who is a total underdog.

Ryan has turned in an inspired performance as a drug-addicted schoolteacher in Half Nelson. He has a great reputation for practically living (and not just acting) his roles and this performance is no different.

Forest Whitaker, who plays the role of the tyrannical Idi Amin, has turned in a fantastic performance. However, he is only a supporting character in the film and is likely to loose out.

Peter O'Toole is a distant third.
