Cinderella stories are as rare as the blue moon in the sporting world of today. By and large, regardless of the sport, the more heavily favored team has a overwhelming probability of winning against its weaker opponent. This is particularly true in team sports at the local, national and international levels.

An underdog prevailing against the hot favorite is always euphoric for the victorious team and its fans (and traumatic for the losing team and its supporters). But, in the larger perspective such 'dream come true' results reinforce 'hope' in the community. They inspire a whole generation into not giving up on their goals in the wake of seemingly unsurmountable odds.

This is tribute to all those teams that triumphed against unbelievable odds in MAJOR sporting events the world over, thus bringing glory to their team (and country in some cases) and capturing public imagination. The compilation consists of the greatest team victories in various sports - both amateur and professional.

Odds: 100-1 for reaching the World Series when the season started

The New York Nets, who had never finished higher than ninth place (next-to-last) nor won more than 73 games in a season since joining the National League in 1962, were not highly regarded before the 1969 season started. The perennially awful Mets trailed the Cubs by 9½ games on Aug. 13 before rallying to win the pennant and reach their first World Series.

The Baltimore Orioles, by contrast, were practically flawless and featured stars at almost every position. They breezed through the 1969 season, winning 109 games and brushing aside the Minnesota Twins in three games in the ALCS to win their second pennant in four years.

Yet, only seven years after they came into existence as one of the worst teams in baseball history, the Mets stunned the Orioles in the 1969 World Series. They prevailed in 5 games to accomplish one of the greatest upsets in World Series history, as that particular Orioles squad was (and still is by some baseball pundits) considered to be one of the finest ever. The World Series win earned the team the sobriquet "Miracle Mets."

Basketball: NCAA Championship Game (April 1, 1985) - FINALS Villanova defeated Georgetown 66 - 64 Villanova College 'Wildcats' – the 8th seed (overall record of 25-10) – came into this game against the defending champion Georgetown University 'Hoyas' – the numb... more

Villanova College 'Wildcats' – the 8th seed (overall record of 25-10) – came into this game against the defending champion Georgetown University 'Hoyas' – the number 1 seed (35-2 overall record) - as a 10-point underdog. But when the clock struck 0:00, Wildcats were crowned national champions.

The shot clock – a rule that existed at that time - played a big role in Villanova’s victory. By milking every possession and keeping the ball out of Patrick Ewing’s hands, the Wildcats controlled the tempo. Villanova made the most of those possessions by playing a nearly perfect offensive game shooting 79 percent from the field, including an impossible 90 percent (9 of 10) in the second half. What makes these numbers even more astounding is that Georgetown’s opponents shot 39.4 percent from the field in the Hoyas' first five NCAA Tournament games that season. Villanova made all 10 of its free throws down the stretch after backup guard Harold Jensen hit a 16-footer to put the Wildcats ahead for good.

Coach Rollie Massimino’s ’85 Villanova team is still the lowest seed (8) to win the NCAA championship.

Cricket: 1983 World Cup (June 25, 1983) - FINALS India defeated West Indies by 43 runs India - 183 runs all out (in 54.4 overs); West Indies - 140 runs all out Coming into the World Cup (aka Prudential Cup), the West Indies were the hot favorites to win. Coming into the World Cup (aka Prudential Cup), the West Indies were the hot favorites to win. They had never been beaten (winning 9 of the 10 matches they played and with a no result in one match) World Cup competition had had won both the previous World Cups in 1975 and 1979. Their team arguably boasted the world's best lineup of players. So, no one was surprised when West Indies made it to the final, dominating most of their matches and losing just 1 of their 7 matches played in the competition.

India on the contrary were considered minnows of Cricket having won only 1 of their 6 matches in world cup competition. So, it was indeed a surprise when they made it against all odds to the final game. No one gave them even a semblance of a chance to win against the mighty West Indies team.

True to common expectation, India batting first in the final did not fare well. The entire team was dismissed for a low score of 183 in 54.4 overs (short of the alloted 60 overs). After the poor batting performance Indian chances were deemed almost non-existent. And, West Indies seemed inevitably on track to win their 3rd consecutive World Cup. However, the Indian bowling exploited the weather and pitch conditions perfectly to bowl out the mighty West Indies batting machine for 140, thus winning the finals by 43 runs. It was one of the least probable upsets in sports history.

India was universally acclaimed to be the undisputed superpower of field hockey in the world during much of the 20th century. At the Olympics from 1928 – 1956, India won 6 consecutive gold medals. During this golden era when it was at its dominant best, India played 25 Olympic matches, won all 25, scored 178 goals (at an average of 7.12 goals per match) and conceded only 7 goals!

True to its reputation, India started its 1960 campaign in spectacular fashion winning all its first 5 matches - scoring 19 goals while conceding just one in the bargain. The final match for the Olympic gold medal was against its traditional rival – Pakistan. In a fast-paced match, Pakistan prevailed over India with the final score of 1-0, thus ending India's consecutive unbeaten streak of 30 matches and 32 years at the Olympics.

The Baltimore Colts (NFL Champions) team had lost only once in 16 games (PF: 460; PA: 158) all season and was the hot-shot “18-point” favorite to win the contest. In contrast, the Jets (AFL Champions) came into the Super Bowl with a relatively modest, but nonetheless impressive 12-3 record (PF: 446; PA: 303).

The Jets quarterback, Joe Namath, audaciously “guaranteed” victory 3 days before the game, then went out and led the AFL to its first Super Bowl victory over the Baltimore. Namath, chosen the Most Valuable Player of the game, completed 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and directed a steady attack that dominated the Colts. The Jets' defense intercepted the Colts quarterback Earl Morrall three times in the first half to jump-start the upset victory.

The Olympic ice hockey superpower Soviet Union was heavily favored to win the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The Soviets had won eight of the previous nine Olympic gold medals. The United States hockey team in comparison was a ragtag outfit consisting of amateurs and college players.

The Soviets had blown away the American college kids 10-3 in an exhibition match just days before the tournament. Yet, the US turned in an inspired performance in front of a partisan home crowd to deliver the mighty Soviet team a shocking 4-3 defeat in a medal round game. The Soviet team lost in spite of having 39 shots on goal in the game as against only 16 by the Americans.

The amazing upset was called the "Miracle on Ice” and was voted the greatest sporting moment of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated. The United States went on to win the gold medal by beating Finland 4-2 in their final game. The Soviet Union eventually took the bronze medal at that Olympics.

Denmark did not even qualify For the 1992 European Football Championship in Sweden. Originally, Yugoslavia qualified for the final stage, but due to the Yugoslav wars, the team was disqualified and their qualifying group's runner-up Denmark took part in the championship. They shocked the continent by defeating the reigning world champions Germany for the title.

Early on they failed to impress and were lucky to survive unimpressive performances against England (drawn 0-0) and Sweden (lost 1-0) before managing to string their game together for the last group match against France (won 2-1) and barely managing to make it to the knockout stage of the championship. They then won against Holland (one of the favorites to win) in the semi-finals.

Against Germany, Denmark showed skill, cunning and determination in abundance. The Danish win in the Final was well-merited and was built on frustrating the Germans into resorting to questionable strong-arm tactics, eventually winning the match 2-0.

Odds: 150-1 to win the tournament

MATCH OF A LIFETIME: The stunning success of Greece, who had never won a single match in their previous appearances in any finals tournament, was totally unexpected. Even several years after the event, many cannot believe how such an utter underdog carried away one of the biggest prizes in the world of sports.

Without a single international star (and only several good club players in Haristeas, Zagorakis, Yannakopoulos, Basinas, Karagounis), the Greeks succeeded on the basis of tactical discipline, self-confidence, team spirit, some good fortune, fanatical commitment and supreme fitness. At the competition held in Portugal, Greece beat Portugal twice, and France and the Czech Republic (all European soccer powerhouses). The final game was a tightly-fought affair.

It was a miracle of miracles, but a deserved one.

Maybe Uruguay would have been the favorites on home soil, but not at a World Cup hosted by the Brazilians. During the tournament, Brazil had been running riot (4-0 against Mexico, 6-1 against Spain, 7-1 against Sweden) while Uruguay were barely scraping through.

In the deciding game the hosts, with 200,000 fans behind them, needed just a draw to finish as winners. It looked certain Brazil would take the title, especially as they went up 1-0 up midway through the second half. However, Uruguay equalized and then with just over 11 minutes left to play, they went ahead 2-1 causing a ghastly silence at Maracaná Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Uruguay clinched the Jules Rimet Cup for a second time. This stunning defeat of Brazil is referred to as the “Maracanazo.”
