This is a comparison of the two teams playing Super Bowl XLI on Feb. 4, 2007. It presents an objective analysis of the pros and cons of each team. It also predicts who is likely to win.

My original point spread was 27-17. But, I have re-evaluated possible scenarios and changed my prediction to 27-24 (in favor of the Colts).

Peyton Manning has the clear edge in this.

He has more experience than Alex Grossman, who is practically a rookie QB.

Peyton also has better career stats (career QB rating of 94+) than Alex Grossman (career QB rating of 72+).

Further, Peyton Manning has more playoff and big game experience than Alex Grossman.

Colts have a slight edge here.

At face value, the Bears seems to have a better rushing offence with Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. They both had better total yardage in the regular season than the Colts backs of Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes.

One of the reasons for this is that the Bears with more conservative play-calling rushed more often (31.4 times per game) than the Colts (27.4 times per game)

The average yards per carry of the Colts (about 4.0) was higher than that of the Bears (about 3.8).

The Colts wide receivers had more total yards (4,397 vs. 3446) during the regular season than the Bears. Their yards per catch was about the same.

The Colts #1 & 2 WRs (Marvin Harrison & Reggie Wayne) have far better career numbers than their Bears counterparts (Muhsin Mohammad & Bernard Berrian)

4 OFFENCE: Kicking

The Colts have an edge over the Bears.

In Adam Vinatieri the Colts have a super-cool guy for pressure field goal and point-after attempts.

5 DEFENCE: Rush

This is one area where the Bears have a huge edge.

The Colts gave up 173 yards per game as compared to the Bears 99 yards per game.

The Colts seem to have an edge here.

In spite of a porous defensive line (which opens up the passing game), the Colts did a commendable job in the regular season giving up on 159.3 yards of passing per game to opponents during the regular season.

In comparison, the Bears secondary gave up almost 195 yards of pasing per game.

But, the Colts had far fewer interceptions (15 vs. 22) during the regular season primarily because they had to play more tentatively than the Bears.

The matchup favors the Bears.

Colts have average of 23.5 yards (vs. Bears: 23.2 yards) per kickoff return and 9 yards (vs. Bears: 12 yards) per punt return during the regular season.

But, Devin Hester holds the key to this factor. He has had 5 returns for touchdowns during the regular season.

8 COACHING

The matchup favors the Colts.

Tony Dungy is more battle-hardened than Lovie Smith. Hence, he knows the nuances of big-game preparation better.
