Each year hundreds of thousands of women and men die from breast cancer. While neither an effective cure nor a means for preventing it has been found, research has shown that early detection and treatment offer the best chance of survival.

Therefore, weekly self-exams and annual mammograms for women in the 40+ years demographic is highly recommended. Checking your breasts regularly will help you detect changes in your breasts more easily.

Tip #1.  view

The best time to do a self-exam is about a week after your period begins.

Tip #2.  view

  • Apply powder, lotion or oil on your breasts prior to examining them. This will help you move your fingers over the surface of your breast more easily.
  • While lying down on a firm bed, place a pillow under your right shoulder. Extend your right arm straight behind your head. This will flatten your right breast and make it easier for you to feel any lumps if they are present.
  • With the digits of three fingers of your left hand, press your right breast to feel the presence of lumps. Cover the entire area of your breast moving in a circle. Be sure to include the armpit.
  • Next, repeat the procedure for your left breast.

Tip #3.  view

  • Make sure to check carefully the appearance of your breasts in a mirror. Look for any changes in appearance.
  • Consult your doctor if you find any lumps, dimplings, swellings, growing moles, skin irritations, distortions, scaliness, thickenings, retraction of the nipples or other changes.

Tip #4.  view

Remember most breast lumps are not malignant. So, don’t panic if you sense anything amiss. All the same, they should be checked by a doctor thoroughly.
