If you want a snake as a pet, it is better to have a wild specimen caught than a captive bred one. Is this true?

Answer:

  • This is not true. Specimens caught in the wild are more prone to parasites and diseases. They are also harder to tame and reluctant to accept pre-killed food.

Is a corn snake a good pet for a beginner?

Answer:

  • Yes. Corn snakes are easy to care for and handle. Besides, they are good feeders.

Which species of pet snake will 'play dead' if it feels threatened?

Answer:

  • A hognose snake will flatten its head, hiss, and strike without biting if it feels threatened. If the perceived threat continues, it will convulse, flip onto its back and play dead. Captive specimens tame quickly and may not exhibit this behavior often.

Can you tell if a snake is about to shed its skin?

Answer:

  • Yes. Before a snake sheds skin, its eyes become very cloudy looking. Its body will also appear kind of dull - with brightly colored snakes, this may be very apparent. They generally become quite inactive prior to shedding skin and not refuse food.
