Replacing the brake pads of your vehicle can be an expensive proposition. Here are some tips for making sure your brake linings last you a long, long time.

The most important tip for reducing wear and tear on your vehicle brakes is the avoidance of excessive acceleration when driving in traffic (e.g., city roads). This will minimize frequent braking of the vehicle and thus reduce "brake fade" ("brake fade" is the decrease of stopping power after repeated application of the brakes, particularly when carrying heavy loads or in high-speed situations).
Select a lower gear while driving downhill instead of applying your brakes repeatedly to slow down and control your vehicle.
To stop or slow down your vehicle, use " brake tapping" (instead of applying constant pressure on your brakes). This reduces brake fade by giving brakes an opportunity to cool down between application and hence increasing brake effectiveness.
When driving with new brakes, minimize the application of your brakes and thus reduce strain on your brakes for the first 100-200 miles. The easing of your brakes increases longevity.
Using higher performance brakes and rotors (which obviously are more expensive) will not only improve braking power but also reduce brake fade.
