Carpet owners across the world have a common pre-occupation. Let’s call it ``carpet-cleaning paranoia’’. I know that’s a bit dramatic! But, it’s true. And, why not? Carpets are, more or less expensive and difficult to maintain, and their upkeep takes time. Most of you who love your carpets and rugs have had to fuss over your possessions at some point of time or the other. As long as you socialize and live normal, healthy lives, it may be impossible to keep that unsuspecting stain from threatening to taint your precious rug. As such, it is crucial that you have your stain-combat systems in place, in which case, you’ll be able to enjoy a fresh and clean carpet.

The first step is to vacuum clean your carpet once or twice a week.
Try not to get your shoes over carpets. Keep the dirt out by keeping a heavy duty door mat and wiping the mud and dust on it before stepping on the carpet.
In case of spills, clean at once. The longer you leave the stain, the longer it’ll take you to get it off. Never rub the muck off the carpet. Use a mild soap, detergent or shampoo to gently ease off the stain. Club soda and vinegar are good stain removers. So, keep them handy.
For liquid stains, clean with a white cotton cloth or plain white paper towels. Rinse with water and blot off the liquid.
For semi-solids such as butter and pudding, scrape and lift off gently with a spoon, rinse with water and blot. Dried solids can be broken up and vacuum-cleaned.
A shop vacuum or a wet / dry vacuum cleaner is even more useful as it can both suck up spills and flush the carpet with water and then suck up the spoils.
Finally, to keep the carpet from smelling and stinking, sprinkle baking soda or carpet freshener on the carpet every two weeks before vacuuming it. As long carpets are stain-free, a regular cleaning routing will keep your carpet will stay as good as new.
How do you remove paint stains? is there a stain removal agent fo r it?
I've a cheapass apartment grade carpet but I found that Spot Shot is the best product out there to treat any type of stains. I was able to pull out dye stains with it too!
