Cars with more powerful engines give lower mileage. So, buying and driving cars with less powerful engines will yield better mileage (in addition to costing less). Using cars with hybrid engines is even better.
Replacing your air filters at scheduled intervals will optimize gas consumption. Old and dirty air-filters will reduce the air inflow into the engine. As a result some of the gas injected into the engine will not get completely fired. This will then cause your engine to guzzle more fuel (and give poorer mileage). This can be the single greatest gas savings contributor.
Maintain your car well. Proper preventive maintenance on your vehicle will insure all moving parts are well lubricated and perform optimally in driving conditions.
Make sure all you four tires are inflated to the air pressure suggested by the vehicle manufacturer. It may also be listed on the side of the tire.
Frequent acceleration and braking will also adversely affect your mileage. So, drive within the posted speed limits; anticipate stops and take your foot off the gas pedal and ease your car into the stop gradually (instead of braking suddenly.)
When driving on the freeway keep your windows rolled up – this increases drag on your car and lowers your mileage. This same concept is applicable to your pickup truck – removing or lowering your tailgate when you have nothing in the bed will reduce air resistance (or drag) and give you better mileage.
Higher octane gas will give you better mileage in general. Another point to remember is that very cheap gas may increase your maintenance costs by clogging fuel injectors.
Driving with your air conditioning turned off will give you better mileage. So, don't turn on your AC unless it is hot outside and uncomfortable inside without AC.
