Illusions in photos can be attributed to using the following phenomena: (1) lack of depth in photos - i.e., presenting 3-dimensional image in 2 dimensions (2) Objects that are farther away will appear smaller (3) The appearance of objects due to differences in light (4) The angle in which the shot is taken, which hides another object in the background.
Then of course, there is the issue of people doctoring digital images.
