You will have to put up a large platform feeder to attract blue jays. The platform has to be large enough for the blue jays to perch up on.
The best way to attract blue jays is to have a feeder stacked with whole peanuts. You can also use peanut kernels or halves. It is a good idea to include sunflower seeds also in the feeder along with the peanuts. You can also throw in some dried berries into the mix. Jays like to feed on berries as well.
Blue jays have large appetites. They also hide their food for future use. So, they may not eat all the food you into the feeder. Hence, you will have to make sure that the feeder has a large amount of food.
Having the right kind of fauna will help in attracting the jays. They like to perch up on acorn, hazelnut, oak, pine, birch trees. So, having these trees in your backyard is a good idea.
If your backyard does not have any trees, or if you have just planted them, an alternative is to have berry bushes and shrubs.
