Of late, doctors and medical practitioners are prescribing anti-depressants very frequently for anxiety and depression. It is important that people who are suffering from anxiety and depression to first try out a number of alternative remedies available before turning to pharmaceutical drugs.

Tip #1.  view

  • It is important to eat right. Foods rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, etc. will help reduce anxiety and stress. 
  • Examples of foods rich in these minerals are asparagus, fish, soy, grains, broccoli, collard greens, bananas, etc.

 

Tip #2.  view

  • Adequate sleep is important for reducing anxiety and stress.
  • Cardiovascular exercise can help increase blood circulation to the brain and the body. This helps reduce stress and elevate mood.
  • Breathing deeply also improves oxygen supply to the brain and helps relieve stress.
  • Yoga and meditation are techniques that can be used to improve mental well-being. Yoga has breathing exercises which can be very relaxing as well.
  • Soothing baths, aromatherapy, soft music, soft lights (e.g, candlelight), etc. can all help reduce stress by having a relaxing effect on the body and mind.

  • Studies have shown that acupuncture and acupressure help relax the mind and invigorate it. Hypnosis can also be effective in elevating mood. These techniques may not work for everyone, though.
  • Herbs such as St. John’s Wort, Valerian, and Gingko Biloba have all been proven effective in relaxing the mind and elevating mood.
  • There are relaxation teas, supplements and Bach flower concoctions available for anxiety alleviation.

 

Tip #4.  view

  • Bad relationships, stressful work environments, etc. can all affect anxiety levels. Make sure you handle these situations appropriately to reduce stress. For instance, negative thoughts about your mistakes or behavior can impact your anxiety levels.
