What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is an alternative to the various temporary means of (unwanted) hair removal such as plucking, waxing, threading, etc. The difference though is that electrolysis removes hair permanently by destroying hair roots.
How does electrolysis work?
As part of preparation, the electrologist will first remove all your makeup. The procedure then consists of sliding a tiny electric needle down the hair shaft and destroying the hair follicle with a small electric current. The hair is then plucked out with tweezers.
An experienced electrologist can remove several hundred hairs in a one-hour session. You can also use a home electrolytic hair removal kit to remove hair by yourself. You can remove 50-60 hairs in an hour with such home use kits.
What are the pros and cons of electrolysis?
Prima facie, electrolysis appears to be a great way of getting rid of unwanted body hair. Yet, several dermatologists recommend that this should be one of the least preferred approaches for hair removal since it often leads to scarring, infection and in growth.
To begin with, it has to be remembered that electrolyis can be painful. Besides, it is expensive and may take several sessions to get all your hair removed. And, it is not even a foolproof method of (permanent) hair removal because about 40% of the hair removed grows back.
