I looked forward to a long vacation to one of the exotic destinations that I kept reading about but never had the time to visit. This long stretch of holidays seemed to be the right moment to take off to Central and South America. Of course this would be on a budget. Here are some of my favorite spots.
I always wanted to visit the Caribbean islands – and I hit one paradise called Roatan Island. It is located about thirty miles off the coast of Honduras, with its blue skies, turquoise water and sandy beaches. The island is also a popular diving location and you could get certified as a scuba diver, if you are interested. Rooms are available for $8 in the budget category and meals for about $5.
Next choice is Peru with its Incan ruins of Macha Picchu, Amazon rain forests, colonial cities, whitewater rafting and mountain trekking. Meals may cost $2-$5, and lodging will lighten your wallet by about $20-$50 a night, depending on where you choose to stay. Cities such as Lima and Cusco are more expensive.
Another place was Margarita Island in Venezuela with its wonderful snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, beach-lounging and horseback riding activities. Great bargains and local culture will be available to you at El Mercado de los Conejeros on the outskirts of Porlamar where you’ll find unique souvenirs crafted by the Amazon Indians.Hostels for lodging can be found for about $14 and meals for $7; a cold beer will cost you just one dollar. Plus, there are plenty of bars, discos and clubs which promise you an exciting nightlife.
There are even more affordable places out there for me to see, specially in the east. Next vacation – Asia!
