These are the seemingly unbreakable world records of track and field for two reasons. One they have stood the test of time for a long time. Two, competition being as fierce as it is, you would expect the difference between the best and the next best to be extremely marginal.

So, it is remarkable that the difference between in each of these track and field events is so substantial. Hence it is highly improbable that the records will be broken. But, then in sports you never say never!

  • This is a track event where you would expect the difference (because of the short distance involved) between the top two best times in the world to be of the order of 0.01 or 0.02 seconds. But, remarkably the difference here is .30 seconds.

  • Florence Griffith-Joyner's record was set almost 20 years ago (29th Sept. 1988)
  • The difference of 0.28 seconds is huge (almost a 0.5 kmph differential in the two speeds)
