Aiming to see this magnificent part of the world is by itself a call to adventure. So, be prepared. You could either stick to the Shivalik region which is at the foothills of the Great Himalayas or aspire to climb greater heights and see the Himalayan region in all its glory. Let me tell you a little bit about both these options.
Pick up maps of India and Nepal and locate the Shivalik region. You will notice places like the Kangra valley, Sirmaur district, Dehradun, Garhwal and Kumaon. Being in this area is the perfect compromise between touching the greater mountains and playing safe.
The more daring among you could opt for an adventure trip wherein you fly into Kathmandu in Nepal and take a trek up to the Himalayas or join a professional group of mountain climbers. In this case, your trip could span out over 27 days.
Even if you are on your own and backpacking your way through, there are certain sites you must see like the Hindu temple complex at Pashupatinath and the Buddhist stupa at Bodhnath.
Subsequently, you could fly to Nepalgunj before beginning your trek through the Humla river valley and on to the Tibetan border. Proceed to the Lake Mansarover camp, crossing the Tibetan Plateau and you’ll see the Gurla Mandata peak all along. From here, you could visit the ancient kingdoms of Tholing and Tsaparang and then hit the base of Mount Kailas in the town of Darchan. You will spend the next day trekking up to Mount Kailas.
This is just one of the routes. There are other options as well. But you’ll be well advised to do your research properly before venturing out into this region. So, brace up and let’s see you undertake one of the most thrilling journeys of your life.
