Hangovers are caused by excessive alcohol in your blood, which dehydrates your meningital fluid. To minimize the chances of a hangover, eat well either before you drink or while you are drinking. Remember alcohol gets absorbed faster into your blood on an empty stomach.
However, it is to be noted that excessively carb rich food along with alcoholic beverages will increase your blood-sugar. This also results in a hangover the next day.
As explained earlier, dehydration is the major cause of hangovers. So, it is important to drink water before and while drinking. 10-12 oz. of water for every 30 ml. of hard liquor is a good thumbrule to use to stay hydrated. Additionally, it is advisable to drink some water before going to bed.
And, remember your body can also get dehydrated if you are drinking beer or wine.
Make sure you count the number of drinks you have. Beer in general contains 6-12%; wine about 12-15% and hard liquor typically has about 40-45% alcohol v/v. It is always a good strategy to not mix your drinks. This way you can track better the amount of alcohol you consume. If you are having cocktails, remember to ask your bartender the amount of alcohol in your drink.
Reduced levels of vitamins can also cause hangover. So, if you have a party planned in the evening, it is always a good idea to pop an extra multi-vitamin tablet in the morning.
Beverages like coffee, soda with caffeine, etc., can also contribute to your dehydration.
When you wake up the next morning, drink lots of water. Eat protein and carb rich food. It is also a good idea to drink water with a pinch of salt and sugar and a teaspoon of lemon juice. This restores the electrolytic balance in your blood. If time permits, go back to bed for a couple of hours. You will wake up totally rejuvenated and minus of your hangover.
