Tip #1.  view

  • Heating is a major drain on your energy consumption at home. In the winters, set your thermostat comfortably low in the winter (70-72 degrees Fahrenheit). Similarly keep the thermostat comfortably high during summers.
  • If your movement is restricted to just one of the rooms during the night, it may help to use place heaters (instead of heating the entire home.
  • Install a programmable thermostat that is compatible with your heating and cooling system.

Tip #2.  view

  • Always remember to wash full loads of dishes in your dishwasher.
  • Air drying the dishes is an energy-saving option to using the dishwasher's drying cycle.

Tip #3.  view

  • Use only compact fluorescent light bulbs. These are much more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs.
  • Remember to switch off lights of a room when you move out of it.

Tip #4.  view

  • Use your washer and dryer with only full loads of clothes.
  • During summers, you can dry your clothes out in the Sun.

Tip #5.  view

  • Electronic devices do not consume a lot of energy in general. Regardless, turn off your computer and monitor when not in use.
  • Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use (TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power).

Tip #6.  view

  • Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120° F.
  • Avoid using hot water unnecessarily. Take short showers instead of baths.

Tip #7.  view

  • Look for the "Energy Star" label on home appliances and products. These appliances adhere to strict efficiency guidelines of the US Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy.
