It is important to ensure your pet has access to water all the time. Have a bowl handy to give water when you are travelling with your pet.
Never leave your dog in a parked car, particularly if the windows are drawn up. The car retains heat and your dog could get dehydrated quickly.
On long road trips, roll down the window or keep the air conditioning on.
Periodically wiping your dog or pet with a wet towel is a great way to cool your dog down. You could also use a water spray, a fan, a water pool, or a ice pack, etc. instead. You can always get your pet indoors to avoid dehydration.
Remember to personalize your care keeping your dog in mind. For instance, pets with darker coats absorb more heat than lighter coats; and larger dogs dehyrdate faster.
Lethargy, bloodshot eyes, excessive drooling, and lack of skin elasticity are all signs of dehydration. Be aware of these and protect your dog accordingly.
Interestingly dogs heat up faster at the underbelly. It is important to cool them down on the underbelly (stomach, paws, legs) rather than the top of the coat.
Rush your pet to the veterinarian if the dog continues to be extremely lethargic on a hot day and you are concerned despite your efforts to cool him down.
