Well, use a good conditioner a couple of days prior to this process to avoid chemical damage. Follow the instructions on the package and never leave the solution on longer than recommended.
For a natural look opt for solutions not more than 3 shades lighter than your hair color. Get a friend to apply the solution for an even effect, especially if you have curly hair.
Remember that the sun naturally lightens your hair at the front so avoid highlighting too much at the back of your head. This is why considering the skin tone is important. Ash, beige and violet are cool shades and golden, straw, caramel, auburn and copper hues complement warm skin tones. Another option could be to highlight the ends of the top layer of your hair so that it gives a sun bleached effect and seems to add volume to your hair as the darker strands appear.
If you want to attempt highlighting with two different hues you can highlight the top layer framing the front and the fringes with one color and the secondary layers near the back with the darker shade.
Remember that you are highlighting your hair, not coloring it. Color only a few selected strands. Bleaching the strands prior to highlighting ensures that the color is absorbed well.
Do note that dyed hair will not take a lighter color. Go to a professional who will strip the strands properly and add toners as required to ensure that your hair takes the color you chose.
Pregnant women and those with straggly hair should also seek professional advice.
