New research has found that men and women speak roughly the same number of words each day. James Pennebaker, the psychology department chairman at the University of Texas at Austin authored the study. His team published the findings in the July 6 issue of Science.
Researchers recorded the daily conversations of 400 university students in the United States and Mexico over a period of several days. They found that females spoke about 16,215 words each day, and males uttered an average of 15,669 words, which was considered a statistical dead heat.
Somehow to me the average number of words spoken daily found in the study appears to be astonishingly high. Assuming that the average person speaks 15 words every 10 seconds (with pauses), speaking 15,000 words is the equivalent of 10,000 seconds. That is roughly 165 minutes or almost 3 hours of non-stop talking.
Now unless you are in a call-center kind of a job, that is A LOT OF TALKING!!!
